CBD dog cookies are an awesome treat to help your dog relax or feel better, and if you love cooking and baking, why not make them at home? By baking treats yourself, you can control the ingredients, the amount of CBD in the cookies, and the overall flavor of the treats.

Just in case, our CBD cookies for dogs have only a handful of ingredients, all human-grade, such as apple sauce, almond butter, coconut oil, and oatmeal flour. Just like you, we like keeping things simple, and for CBD treats, the simpler the better!

The advantage of making these treats at home is that you have full control over the ingredients and the dose of CBD. If you have the opportunity, pick organic and natural ingredients, CBD included, so that your dog gets yummy healthy food without harmful chemicals.

Plus, when you make dog cookies it is fun, especially when your dog begs for food as much as our Winston does!!!

The Health Benefits of CBD Dog Treats

First and foremost, these cookies will contain CBD. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant. The effects of CBD in dogs are very positive, it helps with pain relief, joint mobility, anxiety, stress, and improved overall well-being.CBD is very safe for your dog and pets in general, in a nutshell, infused treats are a simple and great way to help your dog enjoy his everyday life!

What Ingredients Do You Need for Making Homemade CBD Dog Treats?

Most, if not all, of the ingredients you need are available at your local supermarket. This dog treats are very straightforward and use very simple ingredients. We prefer fewer ingredients in our recipes to keep the cookies as healthy as possible. Here's what you need:

    • 2 cups oat meal flour
    • 1/3 cup peanut butter (ensure it’s xylitol free. Natural peanut butter with no sugar added if you can)
    • 1 ripe banana
    • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (melted)
    • 1 egg
    • 250 mg CBD oil (starting amount, only pet CBD, see below for details)

Dogs will love the peanut butter in the cookies, and if your pooch is anything like our Winston, he will love you forever for cooking these treats with cannabidiol and peanut butter!

Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum CBD for Making Treats?

Full spectrum CBD isolate contains all the compounds found in the hemp plant, including THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component that produces the "high" sensation. On the other hand, broad spectrum CBD undergoes an additional refining process to remove any THC, while still retaining the other beneficial compounds present in the plant.

Since THC is toxic to dogs, and CBD is not, the choice is simple: use broad spectrum CBD tinctures for baking homemade treats. Of the many benefits of CBD, none of the health benefits is taken away from dogs by avoiding THC and cannabis. It is actually quite the contrary.

How Much CBD Much Cannabidiol Do You Need in The Recipe?

You will need enough CBD to help your dog, but you need to calculate the total amount based on its size.

If you follow the directions, you will get around 20-25 cutouts if you use a medium-sized cutter (about 2-3 inches in diameter). This means that every CBD treat will have roughly 10mg of CBD in it. Based on how much your dog weighs, you can adjust the dosing. Different recipes may have different guidelines on how to use tinctures to make CBD treats, but in our CBD recipe, we prefer to be safe.

For example, if you have a 30 lb dog, at a dose of 2-4 mg per 10 pounds of body weight, you can use 8-12 mg CBD per dose. Therefore, you can be safe if your baked goods contain 10 mg of CBD as a starting point. If you notice that there is no effect or, conversely, if the CBD dose seems too high, then cut down the total mg of CBD based on the number of treats you bake.

home made CBD dog treats - CBD oil dosage

If we use as reference the dosage chart for our CBD oil (1), you can see that you can measure in milliliters or you can count each drop of CBD oil added to the mix, and to the treats. The table below assumes that you have a bottle with 1,000 milligrams of CBD, and 0.5ml containing 16 mg of CBD. And for simplicity, we will keep this reference for other recipes too. You always want to know how much CBD is in each drop, so pay attention to the labels when you make something new for your pet!!

Step by Step Instruction to Make CBD Dog Treats

Now that you have a good handle on this guide and you (hopefully) picked the correct ingredients and concentration of CBD oil for dogs, it's time to combine all ingredients and do the actual baking for these tasty treats.

    1. Preheat The Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    2. Mash The Banana: In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe banana with a fork until it’s relatively smooth.

    3. Mix All Wet Ingredients: Add the peanut butter, melted coconut oil, and egg to the mashed banana. Mix well until all the ingredients are combined.

    4. Add Flour: Gradually add in the oat meal flour, mixing continuously until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a bit more flour until it’s manageable.

    5. Roll and Cut: Place the dough on a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes or simply cut into squares with a knife. For extra fun you can use bone-shaped cutters, or paw-shaped, or dog-face shapes...the options are endless...

    6. Bake: Place the cut-out treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden brown...or until your pet tells you it's time to remove the tray from the oven ! As an extra tip, check after 8 minutes-ish to see how they are baking. Every oven is different and yours may heat in its own unique way. Since we don't want to burn anything, keep an eye on browning or sudden darkening of the top.

    7. Cool: Allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog. If you don't have a wire rack, your kitchen counter works well...as long as your best friend won't jump on the counter to eat all dog's treats :) !!

How Many CBD Treats Can My Pet Eat?

If you follow the guidelines above, you can give your pet one CBD treat once or twice a day, like morning and evening. This is a starting point since we always suggest starting with a low dose of CBD, or low number of CBD dog treats, and then increasing as needed. For example, if your dog is hyper and you notice that there is no effect, you can gradually increase how many CBD treats you are giving your pet, generally by half or a full cookie.

Alternatively, you can increase the total amount of CBD in the recipe. This means that with each bite your dog will get more CBD. Treat this as a balance between how much CBD oil you put in the mix, the general guidelines for pets, and the directions described in different recipes. You know your pet better than anyone else does. If your pet behaves differently from his/her normal, you will know it.

My Dogs Love Pumpkins, Blueberries, or Other... Can I Add Them?

You can certainly adapt the ingredients in the recipe to whatever you think your dog likes best. In this specific example, while pureed pumpkin is a delicious ingredient, no doubt, instead of adding it to the recipe, I would use it instead of peanut butter.

Also, you don't really need to use the egg if you don't want it or if your pet has caloric restriction. With the egg, treats may become more cake-like consistency, and be crunchier like a cookie or biscuit (same thing?) without it.

You can even roll the CBD treats into balls before baking them. The peanut butter will make it quite easy, and if you don't like the shapes of cutters, feel free to choose the one you and your pet prefer.

That said, this recipe is a simple guideline, you can learn how to make these dog treats at home following what we suggest, and then feel free to modify it and make it your own. If you do please let us know!!

Tips For Storing and Serving Awesome Dog's Treats

The best way to store these pet treats is to store them in an airtight container and put the container in the fridge. Since it's airtight, it will prevent humidity from going in and CBD baked goods will not become soggy or stale or grow molds.

Then, when you put the container in the refrigerator, you slow down any decay or any growing of

bad stuff...aka they will last longer. Remember that you used extra simple ingredients, and the fresher the ingredients, the easier it is for the product to go bad. I can assure you that no dog, or pet, will worry about cold treats :)

When you are making homemade CBD dog treats, think long term, and do not leave them unattended on the table, in an open container, or in direct sunlight...I mean, this is more common sense...but you never know...

Potential Side Effects of Giving Your Dog CBD

While making homemade dog treats is fun, you gotta still remember that they will contain CBD, and therefore you need to keep an eye on potential side effects.

These cookies are infused with CBD, and with each bite, you will administer about 10 milligrams of CBD. CBD may make your dog feel sleepy, cause problems with salivation, and, at times, some tummy issues.

Interestingly, coconut oil can also cause upset tummy in some pets. Coconut by itself is okay if taken in small amounts, but if your dog is sensitive to it, keep an eye out for that too.

Since the side effects are generally limited and transient, just refrain from giving any treats to your furry pup until you can lower the dose, and notice no adverse events.

FAQs - Peanut Butter CBDCookies / Biscuits

    1. Are CBD Cookies for Dogs Legal?

Yes, they are legal, you and your pet are good. CBD oil derived from hemp with less than 0.3% THC is legal in many regions. And here we advocate for using THC free oil in the ingredients. However, it's essential to check your local laws and regulations regarding CBD pet products before you make your own biscuits.

    2. Can I Use CBD Oil Meant for Humans in Dog Cookies?

When you get CBD oil is best to stick with the one that is dog specific or pet specific. Pets CBD oil, when flavored, contains pet-safe ingredients, and while the extraction process is the same as used for human CBD oil, there may be additives in human products that are not good for your dog. There are also CBD gummies or CBD capsules for humans, so please do not try to put any CBD product like this in the treats you are going to make.

    3. How Often Should I Give My Dog CBD Cookies?

How often you give your dog these delicious homemade CBD treats can vary depending on the amount of CBD oil you add to the recipe, the concentration of CBD in each cookie, your dog's health status, and how your dog responds. You can start with one in the morning, or with one around 8 am and one at around 8 pm, see how your pet feels, and then, if needed, change accordingly. It will take between 30 minutes to 2 hours before you start seeing the effect of CBD on your dog.

See the guidelines above and feel free to send us an email at support@giandwin.dog if you need more information.

    4. Can CBD Dog Cookies Get My Dog High?

No, your dog will not get high. CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it won't get your dog high. Yet, ensure that there is no THC in the formulation. Your dog's health is our priority, that's why we suggest using extracts with CBD alone.

Conclusion: Make Dog Treats That You Both Love

I personally think that cooking, or baking, is a way of expressing yourself. And it is a way to express love for the people in your life. In this case, it is a great way to show love for your dog, by taking the time to prepare something unique, healthy, and natural.
