A common question that we often receive is “What is the correct amount of CBD for dogs?”, or "How many mg of CBD should I give to my pet?". Rightfully so, it is important to find the optimal dose because it will significantly affect your pet's health. While the simplest dosage guide says that you should start with lower doses and slowly increase the dosage ofCBD, aka cannabidiol, there is much more than meets the eye.
Here, we will address why factors such as your dog's weight, health conditions, and potency are important. And if you have questions or need help, don't be shy and message us!
How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?
The tables below are a reference for what we have seen being useful as a quick to look up cheat sheet. They are based on the concentrations of CBD (in mg) in our CBD Cookies and CBD Oil, and are in a range at which we observed various health benefits in dogs and cats.
Yet, this is a guideline, so still do your research since it is not a substitute for the advice of a health professional.
How Many mg of Cannabidiol Are in Each Drop of My CBD Oil Bottle?
CBD Oil is probably the most common item among all CBD pet products. Yet, not everyone knows how much CBD oil to use or how many mg of CBD are in each drop, mostly because directions are often too general.
The perfect CBD oil, beside having zero mg of THC, would come in a handy darkened bottle with a dropper indicating the exact milliliters of oil in the dropper. Having this useful measuring tag helps picking the amount of CBD oil that works best for your pet's health.
The table below is a detailed view for a dosing chart to measure and doseCBD oilbased on your pet’s body weight. You can measure each dose as volume (in milliliters, ml) or you can count the number of drops that you administer, and/or pick the desired mg of CBD. Please remember, to nail the ideal amount of CBD oil where you notice an effect in your pet's health, you may have to try a few doses first and even tweak it every other day.
Dog Treats and Cookies | Dosage for Medium and Large Dogs
Dogs are often food-driven, making it easy to give your pet CBD soft chews or CBD cookies. While these are easy to use, there may still be uncertainty about finding the right dosage. To this end, we created a simple dosage chart using our CBD cookies as an example.
Besides being delicious, they are quite handy because theycan be broken into smaller pieces, or even crumbled, to fine-tune the dosage for your pet. For example, one cookie contains 20 mg of CBD, but if your dog needs ten you can split that dosage into two and give half of it in the morning and half in the evening.
Soft Chews | Low Dose Products for Small Dogs
We love dogs large and small, but, we can't mix up CBD dosing for dogs of different sizes. To this end, we have CBD chews that contain 2 mg of CBD per bite, thus becoming a favorite of pet parents who live with smaller breeds of dogs.
The Dosage chart for dogs that we prepared above still applies, but since each soft chew now contains only 2mg of CBD instead of 20 mg, you will have to scale the treats accordingly. For example, if your dog weights 12lb, a safe starting dose will be with one chew containing 2 mg of CBD. Doses can then be increased accordingly depending on how well your pet responds to CBD.
How to Pick The Correct CBD Dosing
The simplest way to think about how to pick the optimal dosage for pets is to consider their body weight, so that small dogs will require less CBD, while large dogs will require more. Yet, there are interindividual factors that will affect the right dosage.
This is similar to what happens to humans. For example, a common health issue like a headache can be addressed very differently. Some people can take 500 mg of acetaminophen and it works great, and for others, 1000 mg of acetaminophen will have no effects.
That’s because we all have traits that make us unique in how we metabolize anything, from food to medicines and alcohol. Let’s quickly break down each factor.
A dog's body weight plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate dosage. Generally, the heavier the dog, the higher the dosage required. That is the reason why a dose for a 3 lb Chihuahua will likely have no effects in a 100 lb Corso. A basic guideline is to start with a (very) low dose of 1mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. However, it is best to start with a lower dosage and gradually increase as needed, based on your dog's response.
The specific condition you are looking to address will also impact the CBD dosage for dogs. For example, if yourdog has severe anxietyor chronic pain, a higher dosage may be necessary. On the other hand, if you are using CBD as a preventive measure or for general wellness, a lower dosage may be sufficient.
That also means that the short-term effect of a lower dose for general wellness will be less noticeable than the effect on an older dog with joint issues who cannot walk. In this case, the latter will most likely be able to move more easily within the first few doses.
The potency of the CBD product you are using is another crucial factor to consider. CBD products come with different strengths, typically measured in milligrams (mg) of CBD per dose. That is why it is so important to carefully check the label and determine the correct CBD dosage for dogs. Also, do not confuse THC with CBD, you want high potency for the latter and none of the former. Any reputable brand selling CBD products allows you to review the lab results associated with each item.
For example, “one serving” can mean two very different things if you are using our Good Vibe Dog Chews, or our Good Vibe Dog Cookies. The former will have 2 mg of CBD per chew, while the latter will contain 20mg, aka 10x more!! Always check the label!
Administering CBD Supplements for Dogs, Cats and Pets
As mentioned previously, one of the easiest way to give CBD to a dog is often by using cookies or treats. Pets are (very) often food-driven and will not refuse a delicious gift from their human!
Food toppers can easily be mixed with both wet and dry food, but one of Winston's favorites is to mix a scoop of peanut butter with a spoon of our CBD Food Topper, making an irresistible treat for dogs of any size and breed!
Splitting Daily CBD Dosage for Dogs, Cats and Pets
Finding how many milligrams of CBD you should give to your dog is only half of the win. The other half will be about when and how often you should administer CBD as part of a correct treatment regimen.
You can give your dog CBD on an “as needed” basis in situations where stress can quickly build up, such as during fireworks, trips, or vet visits.
An example of once a day dosing is before or after a walk for an elderly dog, so that he can enjoy better mobility and/or address post-walk aches.
The correct dose of CBD can also be spread out throughout the day. The most common approach is to give one dose in the morning and one at the end of the day, or every 12 hours.
There are situations where you can keep each single dose low, but administer it three to four times per day, so that the overall daily dosage won't change, but less CBD is administered at once.
These are general recommendations for dogs (and pets in general), since each dog may respond differently to CBD. Overall, for determining dosage boundaries for any of the products you choose, we always suggest starting with lower doses first, and then increasing the dosage every other day if needed.
This process gives time to your dog to get used to CBD products. Moreover, it allows pet parents to observe whether the concentration is too high, whether there are any side effects caused by a high amount of cannabidiol, or conversely whether you need a higher concentration to see the positive health effects they were hoping for.
Monitoring Your Dog's Response to CBD
Once you have started your dog on CBD, monitor any specific health condition or disorder you are targeting with CBD products, such as anxiety, hyperactivity, or joint pain. It is good practice to take your time, and keep a journal of your dog's daily dosage, especially at the beginning when you are looking for the perfect dose. This allows you to review positive or negative effects over time.
If you notice excessive drowsiness, excessive sleep, lack of appetite, excessive salivation, or excessive thirst, it could be a sign that you may need to lower the CBD dosage for your dog.
Conversely, a lack of improvement in your dog's health condition, and no changes in the above signs, could suggest that it is safe to increase the CBD dose to the next step and reconvene in a day or two.
CBD Side Effects for Dogs and Cats
While CBD is generally considered safe for dogs, there can be potential side effects. And please note that THC itself is a health hazard in dogs. The effects of THC on dogs are actually deleterious, so always ensure that whatever product you purchase has zero THC, that is derived from hemp and is high in cannabidiol.
Yet, while there are no severe health risks in using CBD, side effects are usually mild, temporary but still essential to know. Some potential side effects of giving your pet too much CBD may include:
Dry mouth: CBD can reduce saliva production, leading to increased thirst in dogs.
Drowsiness: Some dogs may experience mild drowsiness or lethargy after taking CBD.
Upset stomach: In some cases, CBD can cause stomach upset or digestive issues in dogs.
If your dog experiences any of these side effects, it's important to monitor their halth closely. If the side effects persist or worsen, it's best to get medical advice from a health professional and consult with your veterinarian.
Understanding The Benefits of CBD For Dogs
The health benefits of CBD are multifaceted. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non intoxicating natural compound found in the hemp plant, that is generally rich in cannabidiol and has low levels of THC.
Unlike THC, that instead is found at higher concentrations in cannabis / marijuana, CBD does not have psychoactive effects, meaning it won't make your dog feel "stoned" and it won't pose any real health risks.
CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in both humans and dogs, which is responsible for regulating physiological processes such as mood, pain sensation, and immune response. This means that several health problems are somewhat linked to a functioning ECS, or to one or many receptors modulated by the effects of cannabidiol.
For more details, we have a blog post that offers a review of what cannabidiol is andhow CBD works.
Research has shownthat CBD oils offer a range of health benefits. Products high in cannabidiol have beneficial effects over a variety of medical issues. One of the most common uses of CBD products for dogs is in addressing anxiety disorders. Dogs can experience anxiety in various situations, such as thunderstorms, fireworks, or separation from their owners. CBD products can help calm their mind and nerves and promote an overall sense of relaxation.
CBD is also effective as a way to combat inflammation, making it effective in reducing pain and inflammatory conditions in dogs. This can be particularly beneficial for older dogs suffering from health and age-related issues like arthritis and osteoarthritis. In addition, CBD may help in improving appetite, sleep, promoting a healthy digestion, and supporting the immune system.
It's important to note that while CBD can offer potential benefits for dogs, it is not a cure-all solution. As with any supplement or medication, it's essential to consult with your veterinarian before starting your dog on CBD.
What Is The Right Product For Your Dog?
The easiest way to find the best CBD product is to consider what your dog likes to eat. Each product can tailor specific dogs with specific needs, you always have to ensure that you are using the ideal dosage. Day over day check for side effects, or conversely, for beneficial effects on your pet's health.
Luckily for you, GiandWin we have a variety of CBD supplements including oils, cookies, food toppers, and chews. They are all made with broad-spectrum cannabidiol with zero mg of THC and we can review them as follows:
CBD Oil For Dogs and Cats with Omega3s
If you're using CBD oil already, our Peaceful Drops CBD oil is a popularCBD oil for dogs product that will rock your world. It is hemp CBD oil rich in Omega3 from fish, and we also made it free of THC for extra health benefits, safety and efficacy. It comes in a dropper bottle with measuring tags, so that you can easily see how many mg of cannabidiol are being administered.
For simplicity, like many CBD products, it can be added to your dog's food or administered directly into their mouth. For example, I started to take four drops of oil and add them to Winston's food, but then increased the drops because (being a little tanker) he needed a little more.
To this end, we explained the CBD oil dosage that you can use as a reference to find out how much CBD oil to give your pet, and you can find a general dose range as a starting point that you feel safe with. The main advantage of CBD oil is its versatility, as it can be easily adjusted to the desired dosage. However, some dogs may not enjoy the taste or texture of CBD oil, making it more challenging to administer.
CBD Cookies and Chews
CBD cookiesandCBD dog chewsare the most common products. The CBD cookies have a high dose of CBD (20mg per cookie), while the chews have a lower dose (2 mg per chew), and they are also the most straightforward products to administer.
Simply put, pick a treat and let your dog enjoy the taste of pure CBD crafted with natural cookie ingredients, and that...is all it takes to give CBD to your dog…seriously, that’s it.
All CBD products we offer are third-party lab lab-tested and pre-dosed, making it easier to ensure consistent dosage. However, it's important to carefully check the label and adjust the number of treats based on weight and condition(s).
Our Food Topper is among the easier products to offer to your dog because it can be directly spooned onto their meals or mixed with wet food and kibbles.
The simplicity of using a spoonful of CBD topper needs to be counterbalanced by knowing how many mg of CBD each dose contains. The label will tell you the suggested dosage for your dog to maximize the benefits, with a spoonful of topper providing up to 20 mg of cannabidiol with zero mg of THC.
